Maria Aishwarya, a class 11 student of a school in Thoothukudi committed suicide by hanging herself. The reason for her to take this drastic step was due to the torture given by her school teacher. It is said that she took leave for a couple of days as her relative had passed away.
This angered the teacher and he made her do 150 sit ups in the class room. The girl collapsed while doing the sit ups and the teacher is said to have walked away unconcerned. The students revived Maria and took her home. The same teacher had earlier accused Maria of cheating in the term exams as she secured the second rank in her class. Unable to bear this torture, Maria hung herself. Her family gave a police complaint and when the police did their investigation, shocking details about the torture given by the teacher Gnanapragasam was revealed by the students. The said teacher is absconding and a special police team has been formed to nab him.
