A Muslim girl student from Udupi has filed a writ petition in the Karnataka High Court to seek a declaration that wearing of a hijab is a fundamental right. Advocates Shathabish Shivanna, Arnav A Bagalwadi and Abhishek Janardhan appeared for the petitioner.
The petition was filed as six students were barred from wearing hijab inside the classrooms and the girls were asked to attend online classes till the issue is resolved.
The petition states that the Indian Constitution guarantees Freedom of religion and the right to profess, practise and propagate any religion.
Meanwhile the Karnataka government has set up an expert committee to resolve the issue and the girls have been asked not to attend classes with hijabs till the expert committee submits its report.
