Due to the nationwide strike called for by the trade unions, around 90 percent of buses of Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) did not ply today. Many employees abstained from work even though the government warned them that their salaries would be cut.
According to official data, there are 3,175 buses that are operated in Chennai. Today, only 318 are operating, while in the entire state of Tamil Nadu, out of 15, 335 buses, only 5,000 are plying.

Due to this, students and office-goers were put to a lot of inconvenience. Even the people who came to Chennai from other districts were stranded in Koyambedu bus stand. Auto Rickshaw and taxi drivers decided to make hay while the sun shines and demanded exorbitant fares from passengers.
