Three convicts in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case -Murugan, Robert Payas and Jayakumar left for Colombo early this morning. They were freed by the Supreme Court in November 2022 after the Tamil Nadu government recommended their release and also for their satisfactory behaviour while in jail.

They were escorted from a special camp in Tiruchirapalli where they were kept after release from jail to Chennai International Airport by a team of police officers. They were recently granted passports by Sri Lanka.
Murugan is married to Nalini, another convict who was released in 2022. Nalini was seen accompanying her husband to the airport. The duo have a daughter who is a doctor in the United Kingdom. Nalini is trying to secure a visa to the UK to join her daughter there.
