Older adults who eat and consume mushrooms more than twice a week have a lesser risk of losing memory as well as language and development skills. A study led by the National University of Singapore had stated that even a small cup is beneficial to reduce the chances of cognitive impairment.

The association is interesting as to how a single ingredient could have a dramatic effect on memory loss. The specific compound is found in almost all varieties of mushrooms called ergothioneine, which is an antioxidant found in many dietary sources one of them being mushrooms.  Other compounds in mushrooms may also be advantageous and lessen the risk of cognitive decline.
