The parents of slain techie Swathi have approached the High Court with a writ petition claiming a compensation of Rs 3 crore from Southern Railways. Their daughter was murdered on June 24th 2016 in the Nungambakkam railway station.

A Division Bench comprising of Justice K.K.Sasidharan and Justice P.Velamurugan allowed the appeal filed by her parents against the order of a single Judge who dismissed the writ petition as not maintainable as they had an alternative remedy to approach the Railway Claims Tribunal. In this case compensation was claimed against the Railways and there was no point in directing them to approach the Railways the Bench observed. Moreover the Railway Claims Tribunal had pecuniary jurisdiction of trying claims up to 8 lakhs and in this case,3 crore was claimed and it declared that the petition was maintainable.
