Supreme Court to extend compensation to minor rape survivors

A three judge bench of the Supreme Court led by Justice Madan B Lokur directed the Special Judges under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act to disburse compensation to the minor victims of sex abuse as per the National Legal Services Authorities Compensation Scheme which provides for compensation for women survivors and victims of sexual assault and other sexual crimes. The NALSA scheme would be made applicable to minor victims from October 2nd till the Centre frames guidelines for compensation under the POSCO.

It provides a uniform payment of  a minimum of Rs 5 lakhs and a maximum of Rs10 lakhs for loss of life and to gang rape survivors in any part of the country. Similarly, in case of rape and unnatural sexual assault, the victim would get a minimum compensation of Rs 4 lakhs and a maximum of Rs 7 lakhs. For miscarriage as a result of the assault, a compensation of Rs 3 to 4 lakhs would be given and finally victims of acid attacks who suffer disfigurement would get compensation of Rs 7 to 8 lakhs
