The City Police have taken the assistance of college students in the city to assist them in night patrolling in certain areas. This move is to bring down the crime rates. Police patrol has intensified at various vantage points in the city and regular vehicle checks are being conducted at junctions.
The Assistant Commissioner of Police V. Muthuvel Pandian hailed this initiative and felt that it would create a good rapport between college students and the police force. Each constable will be given two students who will accompany him on night rounds. City Police Commissioner A.K. Viswanathan issued a circular to all college Principals to send students for patrolling duty and Loyola College was the first college to take the initiative and send 30 students for the service. This programme is launched on a trial basis. Students who have been enlisted were given white shirts, khakhi trousers and caps.
