A 20 year old, law student from Chennai, Deepa Jayaraj got the golden opportunity to play the role of the British Deputy High Commissioner for an entire day. She was one of the seven winners of a contest held across the country where women aged between 18 and 23 were asked to submit a video on what gender equality meant to them and who was their greatest inspiration. The contest was part of the celebrations to mark the International Day of the Girl Child.
Deepa’s day began with a breakfast meeting at the residence of the British Deputy High Commissioner, then she met up with the heads of the sections and was finally interviewed by a radio channel.  Oliver Ballhatchet, the British Deputy High Commissioner said that Deepa  was the first woman  to be the Deputy High Commissioner in Chennai as all the other 26 Commissioners who were serving the post since 1947 were men.
