SC dismisses petition challenging Kanimozhi’s election

The Supreme Court on Thursday upheld the election of DMK leader Kanimozhi from Thoothukudi district of Tamil Nadu in 2019 and dismissed the petition challenging her election.

Kanimozhi’s election was challenged by one Santhana Kumar on the ground that she did not mention her husband’s Permanent Account Number in her election affidavit that disclosed her family assets.
The Madras High Court had rejected Kanimozhi’s plea to dismiss the two election petitions-one filed by Santhana Kumar and the other by a BJP leader challenging her election. So Kanimozhi approached the Supreme Court.
Kanimozhi had stated that her husband was an NRI living in Singapore and did not possess a PAN card and was not an income tax payer in India.
A bench comprising Justices Ajay Rastogi and Bela M Trivedi dismissed the election petition saying that the allegations against Kanimozhi were ”bald and vague”.
