The residents of Sathankulam feel that the name of the devil has cast a spell on their town due to the name ‘Sathan’ which means devil in Tamil. The town was originally known as Thirukolindupuram or Veera Marthanda Nallur till the 17 th century. Sattu means trade of consignment transported by bullock carts and kulam refers to market place. The name Sathukulam may have got transformed into Sathankulam over the years.

As words are supposed to have power, the residents feel that when people keep calling the town as Sathankulam, it seems to bring ill luck. They feel it would be better to change the name to its earlier name even though it is a cumbersome process requiring gazette notification. The residents are hoping that the government will come forward and do the needful regarding the change of name.
