Sarveshwar Dayal Saxena’s ‘BAKRI’ – a satire in Hindi

‘Bakri’ is a timeless political satire written by Sarveshwar Dayal Saxena. It is the story of three cunning hoodlums who want to become rich and famous. They do this by conning people into believing that a goat owned by a poor villager belongs to Mahatma Gandhi and that it has magical powers.
Manoj, a responsible young man questions the villagers about their belief system and tries to educate them on how they are being duped by the trio using the goat as a religious and political weapon. Politicians accuse Manoj of waging a war against Bakri mata who now is a Goddess and brand him anti-national.
The play is a socio-political statement, in the form of a satire, to show the mask of Gandhi’s philosophy worn by post-independant political systems full of greed and farce.
