Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has been found guilty and sentenced to 2 years in prison in a 2019 criminal defamation case over his remarks about Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s surname by a court in Surat. Rahul was granted bail for 30 days and is allowed to file an appeal.

This case was filed against Rahul Gandhi by BJP MLA and former Gujarat minister Purmesh Modi for passing a comment ”How come all thieves share the Modi surname.” Rahul Gandhi had made this remark while addressing a rally at Kolar in Karnataka just before the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.
He appeared in the Surat court in October 2021 to record his statement. Even though his lawyer argued that the proceedings were flawed and that the PM should have been the complainant instead of MLA Parmesh Modi. However, the magistrate pronounced his verdict and passed orders against Rahul Gandhi.
