Queen Elizabeth drops to 46th position in the Forbes most powerful women list of 2020. She was at number 40 in 2019. The top spot is held by German Chancellor Angela Merkel and US Vice President elect Kamala Harris has climbed to the third spot. The Queen is most loved and respected as the longest reigning monarch in British history. The Queen is 94 years old and still sets the tone at public events and receives world leaders at Buckingham Palace and Windsor Castle. She was at number 26 in the year 2016.

According to Professor Qing Wang from the University of Warwick, ”The extent of the Queen’s impact on the country’ s soft power is hard to measure, but the way she or the royal family are used in diplomatic relations emphasises the important role they play,” The Queen is said to exercise her powers by way of influence behind closed doors. Even though many other leaders have overtaken the Queen, she wields a particular form of soft power which has become essential in British diplomacy over the decades. There are nine other heads of state on this list. The list of 2020 features 17 new women which explains why the Queen has slipped down the ranks.
