King Charles III, awarded his younger brother Prince Edward with the title Duke of Edinburgh. This title was last held by their father, the late Prince Philip. Both the late Queen Elizabeth II and her late husband Prince Philip wanted this title to be inherited by Prince Edward but the ultimate decision had to be made by King Charles.

The title was conferred on Prince Edward on his 59th birthday. He is currently known as the Earl of Wessex. This title will however not be inherited by Prince Edward’s 15 year old son James. He will instead become the new Earl of Wessex. Prince Edward’s wife Sophie will now be known as the Duchess of Edinburgh.
The dukedom was created for Prince Philip in 1947 after his marriage to the then Princess Elizabeth.
