President Droupadi Murmu honoured with award in Suriname

President Droupadi Murmu was conferred with the highest civilian award by Suriname. The award was presented to her by the President of the Republic of Suriname, Chandrikapersad Santokhi. The award-The Grand Order of the Chain of Yellow Star is Suriname’s highest distinction and President Murmu is the first Indian to receive this award.

After receiving the award, President Murmu stated that it was a great honour to receive this award and that it holds significance not only for her but for the 1.4 billion people of India.  She dedicated the award to the ”successive generations” of the Indian-Suriname community.
President Murmu arrived in Paramaribo, Suriname on June 4 and was received at the Johan Adolf Pengel International Airport with full state honours by Chandrikapersad Santokhi, the President of Suriname.
India and Suriname signed four major Memoranda of Understanding in the fields of health, agriculture and capacity building.
