Prime Minister Narendra Modi will unfurl a new naval flag and will do away with the old one that features a prominent cross of Saint George, the national flag of England and a legacy from India’s colonial past.

The Prime Minister will reveal the new design on Friday in Kerala at the commissioning of the Vikrant which his office states to be a significant step for military self-reliance.
The government is seeking to wean the country off its dependency on foreign military purchases and to build a domestic defence hardware industry. India is a member of Quad along with the United States, Japan and Australia. The main aim is to provide a substantive counterweight to the rising military and economic power of China.
