The ban on plastic may be good for the environment but it has snatched away the livelihood of about 50 lakh employees. The Tamilnadu Government had banned use of non- biodegradable and single – use plastics on January 1st, 2019.
From the 2nd of October which happens to be Gandhi Jayanthi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will seek to enforce the ban on one- time use plastic products in the entire country. The restricting of production and use of plastic would be done in a phased manner. The biggest challenge here would be how to deal with the 50 lakh employees who have been deprived of their livelihood due to the ban. The Plastic processing industry has over 30,000/ units and an annual turnover of about 2 25 lakh crores according to the All India Plastic Manufacturing Association.
