PENN celebrates first anniversary

PENN (Protection and Empowerment of Naree) which is a registered trust based in Mylapore, Chennai, formed to protect sexual violence against women and children celebrated it’s first anniversary on the 13th of February, 2021 at WelcomHotel. The chief guests for the event were Ms. Seema Agarwal, IPS,  (Additional Director General of Police Prevention of Crimes against Women and Children) and Carnatic vocalist and playback singer P. Unnikrishnan. Several public awareness videos created by the trust were screened. A painting was unveiled to honour late S. Sreeram, one of the founders of the trust.

With International Women’s Day around the corner, PENN has planned some events and competitions with an aim to spread awareness on gender sensitization and to increase the use of safety apps. One such competition is an Art Competition titled ‘Sketch a Solution.’ for the age group 15- 25 years and the other is a Short Film Competition titled ‘Voice of Women’ for the age group 18- 30 years. PENN was formed by a group of professionals from different fields. – VS Sridhar, a senior corporate executive, late S.Sreeram, consultant to the Tamil Nadu Police, KravMaga trainer and actor, Sriram Sharma, theatre director, music composer, playwright and lyricist. Anand, a technocrat, youth development trainer and motivational speaker and Swarnalatha Mahesh, Advocate who specialises in women and child safety.
Since its inception, a number of programmes to raise public awareness and to address the issue of sexual violence against women and children were held.They plan to create community engagement programmes, conduct webinars and seminars, to connect with educational institutions, to conduct self- defense workshops for women and to reach out to peopkle through theatre and through celebrities this year.
