Parts of Tamil Nadu battered by rains

Tamil Nadu received an unprecedented spell of heavy rainfall yesterday. Many roads and subways have been flooded due to the heavy rain. A flood-like situation has been caused in Chennai and traffic has literally come to a standstill.
The Indian Meteorological Department issued a red alert for Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kanchipuram and Chengalpattu districts. Heavy to extremely heavy rainfall is expected in the next two days with expected damage on crops, cattle and damage to settlements.


Water from the Redhills tank was released as a precautionary measure and people who live on its banks were alerted.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin visited the flood control room in the Greater Chennai Corporation to take stock of the situation.
Fishermen have been warned not to venture into the sea as strong winds are predicted. More rainfall has been predicted till January 2.
