Tending the Garden of the Mind
By Justice N.Anand Venkatesh

0

The human mind is like a vast garden, filled with seeds of thoughts—some inherited, some learned, and others hidden deep within. These seeds shape who we are and influence our actions, yet understanding this inner landscape is a profound challenge. The interplay between philosophy and neuroscience complicates our grasp of free wil and self-awareness.

Philosophers have long questioned whether we truly control our thoughts and choices or if unseen forces guide us. Neuroscience adds to this conversation by showing that our brains often make decisions before we consciously realize it. This suggests that free wil might be more of an ilusion than we think. If our minds act before we decide, how can we truly know ourselves?

Within this complex framework lies the subconscious—a place where dormant thoughts wait for the right moment to surface. These seeds can come from our ancestors, society, or personal experiences. Some grow into strengths like kindness and resilience, while others become weeds of fear, anger, or self-doubt. The challenge is to identify which seeds are sprouting within us and how they affect our lives.

This task resembles tending a garden filled with both flowers and weeds. Negative thoughts often take root without us noticing, influencing our choices and behaviors. They can lead to anxiety about pursuing dreams or create patterns of unhealthy relationships. Recognizing these harmful influences requires courage and self- reflection—a wilingness to face uncomfortable truths.

Philosophically, this journey is about seeking authenticity. It prompts us to ask whether we are living true to ourselves or simply conforming to societal expectations. While this process can be painful, it also offers the chance for transformation as we explore hidden parts of ourselves.

Neuroscience provides hope through the concept of neuroplasticity—the brain’s ability to change based on experiences. Just as negative thoughts can take root, positive ones can be cultivated through practice. Techniques like mindfulness and cognitive behavioral therapy help individuals replace harmful thoughts with healthier ones, promoting growth.

However, the complexity of human nature makes complete understanding difficult. Our minds are influenced by genetics, environment, emotions, and many other factors, creating unpredictability in our thoughts and feelings.

Societal pressures add another layer of difficulty. In seeking approval from others, we may suppress genuine feelings while allowing negativity to thrive unchecked. Balancing these influences requires patience and compassion as we navigate the light and dark within us.

Ultimately, recognizing the seeds in our minds is an act of bravery. It involves accepting that while we may never fully understand ourselves, we have the power to create change through awareness and intention. By nurturing our inner garden with care, even dark seeds can become sources of growth.

In this journey of self-discovery, let’s embrace the challenge of understanding our minds as a rich tapestry woven from unique experiences. Through reflection and intention, we reclaim our ability to live authentically in a world that often tries to define us from the outside rather than allowing us to define ourselves from within.

In the garden of my mind, seeds lie in wait,
Some bloom with beauty, some whisper of fate.
Dark roots linger, hidden and deep,
Waking in shadows, from subconscious sleep.
When wil I burn what poisons my soil,
And free my spirit from inner turmoil?
Each thought a choice, a path to take—
Will I plant light or let darkness awake?

Rethinking Parenting in the Digital Era: A Reflection on Netflix’s Adolescence
By Justice N.Anand Venkatesh

0

Netflix’s Adolescence is a groundbreaking four-episode documentary series that delves into the intricate and often harrowing realities of raising children in today’s cyber-centric world. Directed by Philip Barantini, this poignant exploration captures the emotional turmoil and societal pressures that can lead even well-loved children into dangerous territories.

The series centers around 13-year-old Jamie Miller, portrayed brilliantly by Owen Cooper, who finds himself at the center of a tragic incident—the murder of his classmate Katie. Through Jamie’s story, we are drawn into a narrative that is both gripping and deeply unsettling, revealing how the seemingly innocent world of adolescence can quickly spiral into chaos.

The documentary does an exceptional job of showcasing the myriad complexities parents face in this digital age. In a world where social media dictates social standing and online interactions can lead to bullying and rejection, even children from nurturing families are not immune to the influences that can push them toward destructive behaviors. The series poignantly illustrates how the pressures of fitting in, coupled with the anonymity of the internet, can warp young minds and lead them down perilous paths. It raises essential questions about parenting in an era where children are exposed to a constant barrage of information and peer opinions that can shape their self-esteem and world view.

What makes Adolescence particularly striking is its innovative storytelling technique—each episode is filmed in a single, continuous take. This immersive approach heightens the emotional stakes, allowing viewers to experience the raw intensity of Jamie’s journey in real-time. The performances are nothing short of remarkable, especially Stephen Graham’s portrayal of Eddie Miller, Jamie’s father, who grapples with feelings of helplessness and despair as he tries to understand his son’s actions.

As the series unfolds, it becomes clear that Adolescence is more than just a gripping drama; it serves as a critical commentary on the societal factors influencing youth today. It explores themes such as toxic masculinity, peer pressure, and the insidious nature of online bullying with unflinching honesty. The documentary compels viewers to reflect on their roles as parents and guardians in guiding children through these turbulent waters. It emphasizes the urgent need for open dialogues about mental health, self-worth, and the impact of technology on young lives.

Ultimately, Adolescence is an emotionally charged yet enlightening viewing experience that resonates deeply with anyone who has navigated the challenges of raising a child in this cyber era. It serves as a powerful reminder that while love and support are crucial, they may not be enough to shield children from the complexities they face today. This documentary is not just essential viewing for parents; it should be part of educational discussions within institutions dealing with children and youth. It encourages us all to engage in meaningful conversations about how we can better support our young people in an increasingly complicated world.

Watching Adolescence left a profound impact on me, prompting a deep reflection on the complexities of child-rearing in our current world. The documentary illuminated the stark realities that today’s children face, and it made me acutely aware of the challenges that lie ahead. As technology continues to evolve and social media becomes even more pervasive, the pressures on young minds are likely to intensify. This realization has encouraged me to rethink my approach to parenting, emphasizing the importance of fostering open communication, emotional intelligence, and resilience in my children. The series serves as a sobering reminder that as guardians, we must not only provide love and support but also equip our children with the tools they need to navigate an increasingly complicated landscape. It has inspired me to advocate for proactive measures within our communities and educational systems to address these challenges head-on, ensuring that future generations are better prepared to thrive in a world where the complexities of adolescence are only expected to grow.

Madhavi Latha Prathigudupu, a visionary business leader, social advocate and entrepreneur was born in Sathupalli in Khammam district of Telangana State to a High School teacher Parthasarathy Raju and Varalakshmi Devi, a home maker. She schooled at the Panchayat Samithi Primary School in Sathupalli and later at the S.B.S. Government Junior College, Sathupalli.

Tragedy struck when Madhavi was affected by a massive polio attack when she was just 7 months old. Her father and brother used to carry her to school. She was unable to pursue regular education after class 10 and she was constrained to pursue her education privately.

She was taught to be independent from a very young age and was brought up in a very close knit family. Madhavi is the youngest child and has 3 elder sisters and one elder brother.

She was a bright student who excelled in Mathematics. She completed her bachelor’s degree in Mathematics from the Osmania University.

As her father was very progressive in his thinking, he educated all his 4 daughters and made them financially independent. According to Madhavi, most of the girls in her village were given in marriage just after they completed their schooling.

Madhavi was motivated to take up a job and become independent too just like her elder sisters. She applied for a suitable position in LIC but they did not recruit people with mobility related issues at that point of time. Being a determined lady, Madhavi did not give up and wrote the BSRB exams and got selected by State Bank of India. She later moved on to a multi national bank in Hyderabad and eventually resigned due to health reasons.

At this juncture, her health deteriorated and she consulted an orthopaedic surgeon who suggested a spine surgery but did not guarantee success of the surgery.

Madhavi therefore tried alternative course of treatment like ayurveda and homeopathy. It was her visit to a psyiotherapist that changed the course of her life. He advised her to go in for hydrotheraphy and to try swimming. She took his advice and found great improvement in her health. She also managed to find a coach to teach her swimming. She was first taken to a baby pool till she learned the basics and gained confidence.

She took to swimming as a duck takes to water and even entered in the 11th National Paralympic Swimming Championship in 2011 held at Kolhapur, Maharashtra and won three gold medals. She also won the Individual Championship under S1-Women Senior category. She won more medals in the Paralympic Swimming Championships held in 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015 as well.

Madhavi then started Paralympic Swimming Association of Tamil Nadu and trained more than 300 people with disabilities. She also started supporting wheelchair basketball and succeeded in getting the support of an NGO from the UK.

This motivated her to start a wheelchair basketball association of India. She served as President for 2 terms and she reached out to 650 players.

This is not all. Madhavi was filled with a desire to help out people with disabilities and started arranging courses for such people in filmmaking, acting, directing etc.

All her life, she was interested in becoming an entrepreneur and that wish of hers came true when she set up a company along with a close friend. Named AM Media & Sports, this is a startup that leverages digital platforms to produce and distribute content focused on sports, inclusion and societal change.

She also founded ‘’Yes, We Too Can’’, an initiative focused on ensuring accessibility and equal opportunities for persons with disabilities. The YWTC Charitable Trust drives social empowerment in her various roles.

Her work extends beyond the realm of sports and media and through her various initiatives she has championed the cause of change and built pathways for people with disabilities to access equal opportunities in both education and the workplace. She serves as an advisor to Anyssa Venture Capital that focuses on disability inclusion in Asia and Africa.

Madhavi is also an accomplished writer, media creator and director. She has co-directed and produced impactful films and documentaries that amplify inclusion in the corporate and sports ecosystems. Some of these films were screened at the International Film Festival of India. Her autobiography, ‘’Swimming against the tide’’ has earned widespread acclaim and received rave reviews.

She is the recipient of numerous awards including the Rotary Club of Chennai Galaxy Distinguished Award, Woman of Resilience Award, Evvolv Women Achiever Award, Great Diversity and Inclusion Award, Path Breaker Award etc.

Burning with an unwavering commitment to inclusion and a passion for media-driven advocacy, Madhavi continues to be a transformative force in driving positive change within society.
