SC dismisses petition challenging Kanimozhi’s election

0

The Supreme Court on Thursday upheld the election of DMK leader Kanimozhi from Thoothukudi district of Tamil Nadu in 2019 and dismissed the petition challenging her election.

Kanimozhi’s election was challenged by one Santhana Kumar on the ground that she did not mention her husband’s Permanent Account Number in her election affidavit that disclosed her family assets.
The Madras High Court had rejected Kanimozhi’s plea to dismiss the two election petitions-one filed by Santhana Kumar and the other by a BJP leader challenging her election. So Kanimozhi approached the Supreme Court.
Kanimozhi had stated that her husband was an NRI living in Singapore and did not possess a PAN card and was not an income tax payer in India.
A bench comprising Justices Ajay Rastogi and Bela M Trivedi dismissed the election petition saying that the allegations against Kanimozhi were ”bald and vague”.

Top AI scientist quits job at Google

0

Geoffrey Hinton, referred to as the ‘godfather of AI’ was working with Google for more than a decade. He had dedicated his life to the development of Artificial Intelligence.

However, he now feels that Artificial Intelligence will ultimately lead to the destruction of humanity and as an employee of Google, he could not talk about the dangers of AI. He therefore quit his job last month.
Currently Microsoft and Google are in the middle of a race and Dr. Hinton feels that as these two tech giants are locked in a competition, it may be impossible to stop.
He is concerned about the misinformation that AI is spreading and how a layperson will not be able to find out what is the exact truth.
Moreover, AI might replace the jobs of personal assistants and translators and put people out of their jobs. He also fears that enhanced versions of AI may become a threat to humanity itself.

Single mother wins case to get father’s name removed from son’s passport

0

A single mother filed a petition before the Delhi High Court to remove the father’s name from her minor son’s passport as the child was abandoned by his father even before he was born and she is raising her son single-handedly.

Justice Prathiba M Singh observed that this case was one where the father completely deserted the child and due to the unique circumstances of the case, directed that the name of the father of the minor boy be removed from the passport and a new passport to be issued in the name of the child without the name of the father.
The court relied on the Passport Manual that recognised that passports can be issued under certain circumstances without the name of the father. However, it pointed out that such relief can be granted based on the factual position of each case and that no hard and fast rule can be applied.
