Australia is hosting an exhibition of Indigenous Art in Bengaluru from 16 to 25 May at the Bangalore International Centre. The exhibit of works by Indigenous artists highlights the importance Australia places on its First Nations cultures as a vital part of its national identity.
Titled ‘Jarracharra’, for the name given to a distinctive wind which blows across Arnhem Land in Australia’s far north in the dry season, the exhibition includes a range of screen-printed textiles created by female First Nations artists from the Bábbarra Women’s Centre. Their work pushes artistic barriers to depict ancient narratives through contemporary mediums. The exhibition also includes some woodblock prints done on paper.
Speaking at the launch event, Ms Sarah Kirlew, Australian Consul General for South India said, “We are glad to bring the Jarracharra exhibition to a vibrant, international city like Bengaluru. I hope that by visiting Jarracharra, the Bengaluru audience will learn more about Australia’s diverse, strong and vibrant First Nations cultures and develop a broader impression of modern Australia.”
Australia’s First Nations people are the oldest continuous culture on earth, having inhabited Australia for over 65,000 years. Australia is committed to sharing their stories and art with the world. Australia appointed its inaugural Ambassador for First Nations People in March 2023 to elevate the perspectives of First Nations people in its diplomacy.
Jarracharra has been displayed in leading galleries globally and comes to Bengaluru after a tour to Kolkata, Mumbai, Delhi and Chennai. The exhibition includes new pieces and woodblocks developed collaboratively when artists from the Bábbarra Women’s Centre visited the Tharangini studio in Bengaluru in early 2023. The new co-created textiles combine traditional Indian woodblock carving and printing with Indigenous Australian designs.
Talking about the collaboration between the artists from Bábbarra Women’s Centre and artisans from the Tharangini studio, Padmini Govind, Partner, Tharangini Studio said “We spent over three months translating Bábbarra’s traditional designs into hand carved woodblocks. When the artists Janet and Deborah came to Tharangini, a beautiful, visual dialogue connected our block print artisans with them. It was as if they had been working collaboratively for years. It was an honour and privilege for all of us at Tharangini.”
Speaking at the event Ms Arora and Ms Pais said “It has been such an enriching experience deep-diving into the lives and work of the women artists at the Bábbarra Women’s centre to curate this show. The Jarracharra in Bangalore invites you to get to know the women artists and view their textiles once you have stepped into their world. Their creative expression comes from a deep and steadfast reverence for their ancient culture and landscape. The collaboration between Tharangini Studio and Bábbarra Women’s centre transcends language and culture and brings together creative practitioners. The joy and exuberance is palpable in their beautiful work, and this is yet another moment to celebrate.”
The exhibition is presented by the Australian Consulate-General for South India. The Consulate extended its thanks to Ms Anshu Arora and Ms Prithi Pais for curating the exhibition.
Jarracharra is open to the public from 17 to 25 May, 9am to 8pm, at Bangalore International Centre, 7, 4th Main Road, Domlur II Stage, Bengaluru 560071.

Crowne Plaza Adyar Park Chennai is excited to announce the launch of its latest culinary adventure, ‘Curato Di Gargano’ – an Italian food festival. The festival offers an exquisite range of Italian cuisine that will take you on a journey throughout Italy. The menu is curated by our chef Gobu Kumar, who has curated this perfect Italian set menu at On the Rocks that will warm your soul.
This Italian food festival is designed to give you a glimpse of the unique and authentic flavors of Italy. The festival menu features a selection of traditional Italian dishes, each with its own unique flavour profile, highlighting traditional flavours from different parts of Italy. It celebrates seafood, several types of pasta from tortellini to lasagna, and the famed Cannelloni for dessert. The festival will be held from 19th May to 28th May 2023 at On The Rocks, the hotel’s signature restaurant.
The festival menu begins with an Amuse Bouche of Beetroot Rigatoni which contains an apple compote, rosemary diplomat, and Abby beet. The first warm course is a choice between two hot cups – Gnocchi & Leek or Watercress & Shrimp Tortellini which features a watercress verde with Tuscany shrimps.
The festival menu also includes two small plates to choose from – Vedura & Anarcadi Fagottini made of caponata vegetables, and a coriander aioli, or Formaggio di Pollo Lasagne, which has piccata chicken, buffalo mozzarella, and romesco sauce. For the refreshment course to cleanse your palette, you will indulge in a Fruit Tagliatelle with Hong Kong pink guava, red chilli, and sea salt.

You can choose from Wild Mushroom Caramelle and a Lamb Meatball Spaghetti. Commenting on the festival, the General Manager of Crowne Plaza Adyar Park Chennai said, “We are delighted to present ‘Curato Di Gargano’ at Crowne Plaza Adyar Park Chennai. Our aim is to offer our guests an authentic Italian culinary experience that will leave them wanting more. Last fortnight, I shared a School Principal’s note to parents on the eve of examinations. It read: “Among students sitting for exams, there is an artist who does not need to understand Math. There is an entrepreneur who does not care about History or English Literature. There is a musician whose Chemistry marks will not matter. There is an athlete whose physical fitness is more important than Physics. If your children score the highest marks, that’s great. If they don’t, please just let them be.”
Close on the heels of this timely dose of wisdom and discernment, came the annual centum carnival. The mainstream and social media went overboard with reports on students who scored full marks, some even in all the subjects. Yes, the story of the likes of Nandhini, a poor carpenter’s daughter from Tamil Nadu’s Dindigul district who notched up 600 out of 600 marks is awe-inspiring and she deserves all the encouragement, blessing and recognition she can get. But let’s please spare a thought for students who managed to pass their exams despite egregious odds. Or those who worked hard but still could not keep the red line away.

Average marks or failure need not determine a child’s future. By hyping the case of super achievers, we unwittingly pile on unimaginable pressure and stress on impressionable minds who may be viewed as mediocre in the present education system.
The downside of a marks-ist approach to education is that it discounts talent and puts a premium on form. Talent is permanent, form is temporary. When M.S.Dhoni goes in to bat in the IPL tournament, even with just 2 balls left, gets bowled on a no-ball and hits a single, do spectators jeer or still cheer him? Maturity lies in judging a person holistically, not on the basis of a few exams or subjects.
The old notions of ‘career’ in my time, used to be only either Medicine or Engineering. Everything else was a consolation at best. Mercifully, times have changed. Do you know what many teenagers in my kids’ school aspire to become? Youtube influencers! With a carefully cultivated following, they may well end up earning much more than the traditional professionals. Not that money is the sole yardstick. It’s aptitude and attitude that decide altitude.
I know of several primary school students who are champions of the environment, those who care for animals, look after their grandparents, many who bake and stitch and write articles and code. Today’s passion could well be tomorrow’s profession. Just look at Ratan Tata’s young General Manager Shantanu Naidu who launched an absolutely brilliant initiative called ‘Goodfellows India’ to provide company for the elderly through ‘grandpals’ For all such ideas, there are sparks flying in pre-teen and teenage years that need to be sniffed out and promoted. That can never happen through this form of Obsessive Centum Disorder.
Although I have no political inclination, I often joke that if I were the Education Minister, I’d scrap examinations and move to a more meaningful stress free mode of evaluation. I’d ban homework and replace it with exciting field visits and digital detox sessions. Now the latest child rights violation is the oxymoron labelled as ‘holiday homework’! I’d introduce a talent identification drive at a formative stage in schools and allow students to focus on their strengths. Let boys and girls be taught cooking instead of just mixing random chemicals in a laboratory. Let First Aid be a compulsory subject. Let Self Defence be part of the curriculum. Let Legal Awareness be imparted through a simple R & D (Rights & Duties) module. Let communication skills be honed from kindergarten to college. Let Money Matters & Banking be introduced to children at an early age.
As Mark Twain quipped: “Never let your schooling interfere with your education.” I rest my case!
P.S
Hope I ‘passed’!
