Former SCBA President seeks 33% reservation for women as judges

Former Supreme Court Bar Association President Vikas Singh has written to the Chief Justice of India seeking to fill in one third of vacancies of judges in the High Courts and Supreme Court with women judges.

Vikram Singh is a senior lawyer and a three-time President of the SCBA, who has pointed out inadequate representation of women in higher judiciary. According to him, out of the 25 High Courts in the country, the High Courts of Patna, Uttarakhand, Tripura, Meghalaya and Manipur don’t have a single woman judge. There are totally only 103 women judges as against 670 male judges in the higher judiciary.
Now that the Women’s Representation Bill has been passed in the Parliament, reserving one third of the seats in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies for women, he suggested that the same system could be followed here to fill the high courts and Supreme Court with women judges.

India wins 10 medals in Asian Games 2023 so far

The medals tally for India has gone upto 10 in the Asian Games 2023 with 1 gold, 3 silver and 6 bronze so far. India struck gold in the 10m men’s air rifle advent. The team of Rudrankksh Patil, Divyansh Panwar and Aishwary Pratap Singh Tomar aggregated 1893.7 and beat the world record set by China.

Aishwary Pratap Singh Tomar also won a bronze medal in the 10m men’s rifle individual event and India also won a bronze medal in the 25m men’s rapid fire pistol team event.
India secured two more bronze medals in rowing events
 The Indian women’s cricket team is currently playing the final against Sri Lanka at the Asian Games.
Indian tennis duo of Ramkumar Ramanathan and Saketh Myneni have entered into the quarter finals after they defeated David Susanto and Ignatius Susanto from Indonesia.

Women’s Reservation Bill passed by the Rajya Sabha

The women’s reservation bill was passed by the Rajya Sabha on Thursday in the special session of Parliament. It was a historic moment for India as this bill gives women 33 % reservation in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi was seen posing for pictures with the women MPs in the new building. Sweets were distributed by women members and a huge bouquet was presented to PM Modi. Though this initiative was planned years ago, it tasted success only on Thursday after the bill was passed in the Rajya Sabha. It got unanimous support from members with no abstention and only 2 negative votes. The bill was passed in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday.
PM Modi said that it is a ”defining moment ” in the nation’s democratic journey.
However, this can be implemented after a census and delimitation exercise which will make it happen only in 2029 or beyond.

Depressed man tries to open emergency exit of an Indigo flight

A depressed man attempted to open an emergency door of a Guwahati-Agartala flight mid-air and wanted to jump from the plane. According to police sources, the man Biswajit Debath is 41 years old from Jirania in West Tripura. He has been arrested for endangering the lives of hundreds of passengers on board.

He is said to have got into a fight with the crew members on board. He will be produced before a court today. Meanwhile investigations are going on.
The incident took place around 1 pm on Thursday when the plane was flying 15 miles from the runway of Maharaja Bir Bikram Airport. The crew members and some passengers intervened and prevented Bswajit from opening the emergency exit and the flight landed safely at Agartala.
Biswajit has confessed that he suffers from depression and that he was trying to jump from the flight by opening the emergency door.

Two Indians in race for post of US President

Vivek Ramaswamy, an Indian-American entrepreneur is in the race for the post of US President. He is next to Donald Trump with 13 percent support and closely followed by former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley with 12 percent support.

Former President Donald Trump is in the lead with support of 39 percent of voters. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis who was considered to be the main rival for Donald Trump has fallen behind two Indian-American presidential candidates- Vivek Ramaswamy and Nikki Haley in the latest GDP polls. It has been reported that both Ramaswamy’s popularity and Nikki Haley’s popularity are on the rise and are going neck and neck.
Another presidential candidate Chris Christie, former New Jersey governor is behind Nikki Haley with 11 percent of support.

Minister Senthil Balaji denied bail by Chennai court

The Chennai Principal Sessions Court did not grant bail to Minister V. Senthil Balaji when the case came up on Wednesday. The Minister was arrested on June 14 by the Enforcement Directorate in a jobs for cash scam in an offence of money laundering.

The court considered three factors- flight risk, influencing witnesses and tampering with evidence. The Enforcement Directorate did not raise the objection of flight risk but objected to his bail petition on the grounds of influencing of witnesses and tampering of evidence as he was an influential person and a Minister too.
Judge S. Ali before whom the bail petition came up, said that the stipulations envisaged under Section 45 of the PMLA were not fulfilled by the petitioner and therefore he dismissed the bail petition filed by Minister Senthil Balaji.

Radhika Merchant, the fiancee of Anant Ambani dazzled in a pastel colour Manish Malhotra saree that was embellished with gold sequins. She completed the look with an exquisite diamond jewellery set.
Mukesh and his sons Akash and Anant were also seen in traditional clothes at their Mumbai residence.

Sonia Gandhi to lead Congress in debate on women’s reservation bill

Sonia Gandhi, the Congress Parliamentary Party chairperson is likely to be the lead speaker of the Congress in the Lok Sabha when the women’s reservation bill is taken up for debate.

She was the main person behind this bill that was passed in the Upper House as early as in 2010 during the Manmohan Singh government, but it was not taken up in the Lok Sabha due to lack of consensus among political parties.
Meanwhile, the government introduced the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam yesterday.  reserving 33 % seats for women in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies.
PM Modi asked members of both houses of Parliament to pass this bill unanimously so that it would strengthen Indian democracy.
The speakers on behalf of the BJP are Nirmala Sitharaman, Smriti Irani, Bharti Pawar, Aparajit Sarangi, Sunita Duggal and Diya Kumari.

PM Modi celebrated 73rd birthday on Sunday, September 17.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi turned 73 on Sunday, the 17th of September. The BJP party leaders celebrated his birthday at various places in the country.

The PM inaugurated the first phase of the India International Convention Centre in Dwarka, New Delhi . He also launched a scheme named ”PM Vishwakarma”, which is a scheme to help artisans, craftsmen and people engaged in traditional skills.

The BJP also plans to organise many welfare activities across the country and launched ”Sewa Pakhwara” – a fortnight of service to mark PMs birthday. This will continue until October 2nd, the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. There will also be welfare measures like cleanliness drives, blood donation camps and health camps organized throughout the country.
Celebrations were held at the Akshar River Cruise, a floating restaurant in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. It  was a dream project of PM Modi. It is the only River Cruise restaurant in the country.
Leaders from India and throughout the world greeted the PM on his birthday.

Actor’s daughter found dead at home

The 16 year old daughter of actor and music director Vijay Antony was found dead at her residence in Teynampet early this morning. It is suspected that she committed suicide. She was rushed to a nearby hospital but the doctors declared her dead.

According to the police,  investigations are going on and nothing can be said at the moment. Her body has been  sent for post-mortem and the report is awaited.
Vijay Antony and his wife Fathima had 2 daughters and Meera was one of them. She was studying in Class 12 in a private school in Chennai and was said to be under a lot of stress.
Many actors and directors have expressed their shock and grief over the untimely and unfortunate death of the young girl.

Central government clears women’s reservation bill

The Union Cabinet cleared the Women’s Reservation Bill on Monday. The bill was introduced by the Congress party years ago and it seeks to reserve one-third of the total number of seats in state legislative assemblies and Parliament for women.

This bill also proposes to have reservation for SCs, STs and Anglo-Indians within the 33% quota.It was former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi who in 1989 who mooted this idea and introduced the Constitution Amendment Bill to provide one-third reservation for women in rural and urban local bodies. Though it was passed in the Lok Sabha, it did not get passed in the Rajya Sabha in September 1989.
Senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh reacted to this development and said that it was a long standing demand of the Congress party to implement women’s reservation and that the Congress party welcomed this move and are awaiting details of the Bill.
