Pope Francis wishes to give more roles for women in church governance

0

In a big gathering of Catholic bishops and laypeople on October 27th, Pope Francis had called for giving more participation for women in church governance and called for research on allowing women to be deacons.

Progressives are hoping that the church will be more welcoming of LGBTQ people and women being offered more leadership roles. However, Conservatives are not for making any changes to the 2000 year old tradition of the church. They warned that opening a debate on such issues was a ”Pandora’s Box”.
Pope Francis however granted women and laypeople the right to vote alongside bishops as he felt that people in the pews are more important than the preachers. He also sought a restoration of female deacons, a ministry that existed in the early church.
The Pope has already increased the number of women in high- ranking positions in the Vatican and said that the same should be done in local churches.

The Amethyst Room presents ‘Cuckoo & Co’ by Pero Fall-Winter 2023 collection from 10.30am to 7.30pm from November 3rd to 8th, 2023 at The Amethyst Room, 106, Chamiers Road, RA Puram, Chennai. Ph : 044 43042099. Price Range: Rs.26,000/- onwards.

p é r o fall-winter 2023, is a nostalgic journey to those olden days when neck ties with small floral prints adorned the necks of almost every man. It was this fascination with vintage neck tie prints and patterns that led to initial print explorations for this season.

This season they developed hand painted motifs inspired from the patterns seen on vintage neck ties of the 1930s. Multiple colors of horizontal stripes, plaids, checks, windowpane, small paisley, large dots, pin dots and Art Deco motifs clashed with men’s shirts during this era. It was a wild and colorful time in menswear. They particularly incorporated the floral patterns, and explored by varying the sizes of those round medallion shapes and forms which were usually very small and minuscule.

They also explored many different ways of simulating these neck tie patterns. They made 3D versions of these patterns using crochete, laser cut fabrics, beadwork, stumpwork, patchwork, appliqué, cutwork and many more techniques.

For this season’s surface ornamentation, they developed mixed media surfaces using thread and metal buttons, fabric and thread flowers etc. On an array of fabrics woven by their skilled craftspeople from Chanderi, Madhya Pradesh and West Bengal. All fabrics used in the collection are hand made locally in different parts of India. To compliment the vibrant folk inspired floral prints, they used a variety of stripes hand-woven in silk and cotton in varied weights, these include ‘mashru’ a traditional textile from Gujarat, gabardine and taffeta silks from the south of India. Apart from these they have their basic cotton fabrics ranging from gingham checks to linen stripes and gauze like solid fabrics with contrast selvedge and handwoven woolen checks, tartans and stripes from Himachal Pradesh and Punjab. They also experimented with varied textures in woven wool to achieve lighter yet fluffier wool making the fabrics very warm and cozy for winters.

The color palette for the season is predominantly navy blue, turquoise, grey, green and white, with accents of all bright colors predominantly fluorescent pink.

They continued their association with women from Himanchal who have been making handknitted sweaters with us for a decade. This season we also made fully hand crocheted garments, in wool and cotton, with their group of skilled Afghani refugee women to explore the old school crochet technique with a fresh take. They also collaborated with ANT45 to develop L O V E socks for their fall-winter 2023 line.

Echoes of Earth Hosts Nest Box and Feeder Workshop in Collaboration with the College Of Fine Arts

0

Echoes of Earth recently collaborated with Residents of the Defence Colony Society, College Of Fine Arts, Karnataka Chitrakala Parishath, and WWF-India to host Avian Adventure. The aim of the event was to address the issue of declining nesting spaces for birds caused by urban development and educate the participants about the importance of birds, their ecology, and conservation efforts.

The workshop took place on the 28th of October 2023 in Bengaluru, and featured various activities and workshops. The sessions included a Nature and Bird walk and a hands-on experience in creating Nest Boxes and Bird Feeders, in which participants could learn the art of crafting these essential nesting spaces. The activities were conducted in collaboration with the Residents of the Defence Colony Society, WWF-India, and the College Of Fine Arts, Karnataka Chitrakala Parishath.

Prajwal Deep, a naturalist and educator, led the nature and bird walk, while Fastin Prasan, an artist and researcher, facilitated the bird nest-making workshop. Both activities aimed to empower participants with the knowledge and skills to contribute to the local bird population.

The need for such workshops arises from the limited availability of natural nesting holes for birds in urbanized areas. This lack of suitable shelter in modern buildings and tidy natural spaces has led to a decline in the bird population. By creating nest boxes, participants in the workshop could positively impact the local bird community.

Supported by the Residents of the Defence Colony Society, WWF-India, and the College Of Fine Arts Karnataka Chitrakala Parishath, the workshop concluded with the construction of nest boxes. These boxes will be donated and installed at the Children’s Park and Walkers Park in Defence Colony, Indiranagar.

Ashok Sarath, President of Decora, Defence Colony shares his enthusiasm saying, “One of the pleasures of living in Defence Colony is the sound of birdsong in the morning and evenings. Nesting, roosting, feeding, calling, they populate our tees and our hearts. We have such a variety of birdlife – from sunbirds and barbets to crows and owls. Plus my particular favorites are parakeets! Home to an avid birder community, Defence Colony residents have also been able to spot more exotic species like Indian Paradise Flycatcher, and Golden Orioles. Truly, we are blessed. And we must keep our blessings alive – which is why I’m delighted that we’re part of the Bird Nest Project in association with Echoes of Earth. Long may our birds continue to thrive and gladden us.”
