Madras High Court directs TNPSC to cancel provisional selection list of civil judges recruitment

A Division Bench of the Madras High Court comprising Justices S.M. Subramaniam and K. Rajasekar have directed the Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission (TNPSC) to cancel the provisional selection list it published on February 16th regarding the recruitment of 245 civil judges. It further directed them to come up with a revised list within a period of two weeks.

The Bench agreed with the arguments of the petitioner’s counsel that the TNPSC did not properly follow the rule of reservation while preparing the provisional list. They allowed a batch of writ petitions filed by 9 aspirants to the post of a civil judge.
The TNPSC drew up a list of meritorious candidates irrespective of their caste and did not follow the reservation policy. The Madras High Court therefore directed the TNPSC to prepare a revised list taking into consideration the reservation policy within two weeks.

Sunil Mittal, Chairman of Bharti Enterprises knighted by King Charles III

Sunil Mittal, the founder and chairman of Bharti Enterprises was conferred an honorary knighthood by King Charles III. The 66 year old businessman is the first Indian to receive this honour from King Charles.

This is one of the highest honours conferred by a British monarch. Mittal said that he was deeply humbled to receive this recognition from King Charles III. He also thanked the government of the UK for their support in making the country an attractive investment destination.
The KBE is conferred for a pre-eminent contribution to any field of activity to foreign nationals in an honorary capacity. The people of the UK get the title of Sir or Dame while non-UK nationals get the honour of KBE or DBE after their name.
Indians who received this title earlier are Ratan Tata in 2009. Ravi Shankar in 2001 and Jamshed Irani in 1997. They were conferred the honour by the late Queen Elizabeth II.

PM Modi names 4 astronauts for Gaganyaan mission

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has named 4 astronauts who are elite fighter pilots of the Indian Air Force to be part of India’s first human-crewed spaceflight -the Gaganyaan mission.

The PM made this announcement during his visit to the Indian Space Research Organisation. The four astronauts are IAF group captain Prashanth Balakrishnan Nair, group captain Ajit Krishnan, group captain Angad Pratap and wing commander Shubhanshu Shukla. They have been training for the Gaganyaan mission in the Russian and Indian facilities for the past five years. They were also awarded ”Antriksh Yatri Pankh” (astronaut wings) by the Prime Minister.
They were introduced by PM Modi who said that they were the ”four horses” who will carry on the shoulders the aspirations of 1.4 billion people.
Indians will be travelling to space after more than 40 years and this time, the rocket and countdown will be India’s.

Madras HC dismisses bail petition of former Minister Senthil Balaji

The Madras High Court has dismissed the bail petition of former Minister Senthil Balaji who was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate in June last year in a money laundering case.

The bail petition came up before Justice Anand Venkatesh this morning and the judge observed that there were no merits in the bail petition. He directed the Special Court to complete the trial within 3 months of the date of receipt of the order copy. The trial has to be conducted on a day-to-day basis in accordance with the guidelines given by the Supreme Court in Vinod Kumar Vs State of Punjab.
Senior Advocate Aryama Sundaram appeared for Senthil Balaji. The court rejected the submission that Senthil Balaji was no longer a Minister but held that he was still an influential person and there was a possibility of influencing the witnesses.

UK First Lady on shopping spree with parents in Bengaluru

The First Lady of the United Kingdom, Akshata Murthy was recently spotted at a shopping spree with her parents Narayana Muthy and Sudha Murty and her two daughters Anoushka and Krishna in Bengaluru.

They were also seen at the Raghavendra Mutt where they were checking out books at the Mutt. They were dressed in casual clothes. There was also no security in sight.
Earlier this month, Akshata Murthy was spotted along with her father at a popular cream ice joint in Bengaluru. Both were seen enjoying an ice cream and came in for praise for their simplicity.
Akshata had also accompanied her parents to a book launch of author Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni titled  An Uncommon Love : The Early Life of Sudha and Narayana Murthy that took place at St. Joseph’s College of Commerce in Bengaluru.

8 year old Indian origin boy becomes youngest chess player to defeat a grandmaster

Ashwath Kaushik is an 8 year old Indian boy who was born in India but has been living in Singapore for the past 6 years. He became the youngest chess player to beat a grandmaster in the classical version of the game.

Ashwath Kaushik defeated Polish chess grandmaster Jacek Stopa at the Burgdorfer Stadthaus Open on Sunday. He has broken the record that was previously held by Leonid Ivanovic from Serbia. He was also 8 years old but many months older than Kaushik. He defeated 60 year old Bulgarian grandmaster Milko Popchev at the Belgrade Open around a week ago.
Kaushik is ranked 37,338 in the world on FIDE. He was first noted when he won triple gold in the Under -8 category of the Eastern Asian Youth Championship in 2022 when he was just 6 years old.. He became the World Under 8 Rapid Champion the same year.

Supreme Court stays criminal proceedings against BJP leader Annamalai

The Supreme Court on Monday stayed the criminal proceedings filed against Tamil Nadu Bharatiya Janata Party State President K Annamalai accusing him of hate speech.  A complaint was filed against him accusing him of hate speech for his remark that a Christian missionary NGO was behind a petition filed in the Supreme Court seeking a ban on the bursting of crackers during Deepavali.

A bench headed by Justice Sanjiv Khanna passed interim orders and issued notice to Salem based activist V.Piyush who filed the complaint against Annamalai.
Annamalai filed the petition in the Supreme Court after the Madras High Court refused to quash the criminal trial pending before the Magistrate court in Salem.
After granting interim stay and ordering notice, the court posted the case on April 29th, 2024.

Karunanidhi Memorial on the Marina beach to be opened today

The memorial of M Karunanidhi, former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu will be inaugurated by Chief Minister MK Stalin on February 26th at 7 pm.

It has been reported that work on the memorial has been completed. The memorial of Annadurai, another former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu has also been renovated and will be inaugurated this evening.
The renovated memorial has an underground museum, 70 screens, touchscreen displays, selfie points and a library too. The underground museum is called Kalaignar Ulagam The achievements of Karunanidhi as CM are displayed here.
People will be permitted to take selfies with the statue of Karunanidhi designed as if he is sitting in his Gopalapuram residence. On the touchscreens, important works of Karunanidhi including his autobiography can be viewed.

PM Modi offers prayers at Temple in Dwarka

Prime Minister Narendra Modi offered prayers on Sunday at the Dwarkadhish Temple at Dwarka in Gujarat by diving into deep water. He called it a divine experience.

The city of Dwarka is immersed in water. The PM shared pictures of himself underwater wearing scuba gear and exploring the lost city of Lord Krishna. The city is believed to have been ruled by Lord Krishna and that it was swallowed by the sea after Krishna’s departure from Earth.
Dwarka is a city hidden underwater and has beautiful gates and tall buildings. It is said that Lord Krishna himself constructed the city.
PM Modi took a peacock feather and placed it at Lord Krishna’s feet and it was a dream fulfilled for him. He also inaugurated the Sudarshan Setu, a four-lane cable-stayed bridge connecting Okha to Beyt Dwarka island.

Priyanka Gandhi to join Bharat Jodo Nyaya Yatra of the Congress

Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra will join the Bharat Jodo Nyaya Yatra in Moradabad in Uttar Pradesh. She will travel to Fatepur Sikri via Amroha. Sambhai, Bulandshahr, Aligarh, Hathras and Agra.

She expressed her disappointment for not being able to join the Yatra on February 16th due to health issues. Priyanka was hospitalized at the Sir Gangaram Hospital in New Delhi due to dehydration and a stomach infection. She was discharged only a few days ago.
All prominent leaders of the Samajwadi Party will also take part in the yatra. It will begin in Agra on February 25th.
The yatra will have a 5 day break from February 26th to March 1st as Rahul Gandhi has to fly to the UK to deliver lectures at the Cambridge University and also attend some important meetings in New Delhi.

Elon Musk nominated for Nobel Peace Prize

Tesla and X founder Elon Musk has been nominated for the prestigious Nobel Peace Prize as both his companies have helped to enhance global connectivity and safety. Norwegian MP Marius Nilsen nominated him. He praised Musk’s contributions and stated that Tesla and X, are playing a big role in making the world a more connected and safer place.

Another Norwegian MP Sofie Marhaug has nominated Julian Assange for the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts in exposing alleged Western war crimes.  These revelations have contributed to promoting peace by throwing light on the conflicts and their consequences.
The official list of the Nobel Peace Prize nominees has not yet been disclosed. Earlier Congresswoman Claudia Tenney nominated former US President Donald Trump for the award. Her nomination was supported by some and criticized by others.

Anushka Sharma gives birth to second child

Anushka Sharma and her husband Virat Kohli have welcomed their second child. Their son was born on February 15th. They have named him Akaay. The name ‘Akaay’ means the light of the shining moon.

Kohli made this announcement on his social media handle and requested blessings and good wishes and also for  privacy during this period.
Kohli had taken a break from the first two Tests against England due to personal reasons and later opted out of the five match series. He is enjoying some family time after the birth of his second child.
Power couple Virat Kohli and Anushka Sharma got married in December 2017 after dating for many years. They welcomed their first child daughter Vamika in January 2021.

UK PM meets King Charles after cancer diagnosis

UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak met King Charles III  for their weekly audience. The meeting took place at Buckingham Palace after the king attended a church service at his country residence of Sandringham in eastern England.

The 75 year old king was in good spirits and Rishi Sunak disclosed that the king looked well. He told the king that the whole country was behind him.
King Charles III has received many cards and messages and they have made him teary eyed.
The king announced on February 5 that he was diagnosed with cancer and he left Buckingham Palace to undergo treatment at Sandringham.
The diagnosis came 17 months after he took over the reins following the death of his 96 year old mother Queen Elizabeth II, on September 8, 2022.

Actress Rakul Preet Singh got married to Jackky Bhagnani in Goa. The couple shared pictures of their wedding on social media. Rakul was seen wearing a pastel colour lehenga while Jackky was seen in a white sherwani.

Sonia Gandhi elected unopposed to Rajya Sabha

Former Congress President Sonia Gandhi was elected unopposed to the Rajya Sabha from Rajasthan on Tuesday. This is her first stint in the Upper House. She served for 6 terms in the Lok Sabha.

While contesting the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, she announced that it would be the last time that she was contesting in the general elections. She represented Rae Bareli since 2004 and informed the people there that she was not contesting the upcoming Lok Sabha polls due to health and age issues. The 77 year old leader also hinted that there could be a possible entry of a family member from Rae Bareli.
According to media reports, with Sonia Gandhi stepping away, her daughter Priyanka Gandhi Vadra may contest from Rae Bareli.
Some others who were elected unopposed include BJP President JP Nadda and Union Ministers Ashwini Vaishnaw and L Murugan.
