These unforgettable words of the suave and sophisticated Humphrey Bogart as Rick in the film ‘Casablanca’ echo in my ears every time I enter a restaurant that showcases Moroccan food. The elegant and beautiful Ingrid Bergman and Rick telling her the iconic words, “Here’s looking at you, kid” make you want to immediately go to Casablanca and hunt down Rick and his café! But today we are at Azulia in the GRT Grand Hotel and are here to enjoy the Moroccan food being presented to us by Chef Abiram. My guests the elegant Preeti Garg and young Antara Tulsiyan of Gallery Veda and I are looking forward to dinner, as we all love the food of this region.

The GRT Grand Hotel is in the heart of the city and does epitomize luxury with the quintessential South Indian hospitality as their creed. Azulia promises the diner a Mediterranean experience, serving food from ten countries of the region, set in three continents – Asia, Europe and Africa. Quite surprisingly, the cuisine of this region does have plenty of choices for vegetarians as well. Chef Abiram’s career has taken him around the world before returning with a wealth of experience to his roots in India. With his passion for Mediterranean cuisine, Chef Abiram always gives the discerning diner a great experience.

Preeti Garg and Antara Tulsiyan are both involved in the burgeoning art scene of our city, having started Gallery Veda in Chennai. Preeti’s interest in art developed into a fascination and this led to the launch of the gallery. Their intention is to make art more inclusive, and not as intimidating as it is sometimes perceived and they have launched two more galleries in Chennai. She feels that there is a lot more work to be done and so much more to achieve. Antara Tulsyan’s college background in sculpture from the Bryn Mawr College in the US, gave her a strong grounding in art, as did her family’s passion for art. Having grown up under the influence of an avid collector in her father, Antara has found the perfect space in Gallery Veda to indulge her passion and sensibilities.

As we chat casually, Chef Abiram gets us seated and we are ready to go. Our first course is a simply outstanding soup, made of roasted pumpkin and carrots flavoured with ginger; it is creamy and delicious, as is the thyme-scented chicken with onion soup. The “Nice Little House Salad” was just perfect; lettuce leaves with strawberry and avocado, tossed in a Pommery orange and mustard dressing. The cold mezze platters in both the vegetarian as well as the meat version are excellent. Accompanied with warm pita bread, there is the Hummus Azulia, with the dual flavours of hummus with basil and roasted bell peppers, Moutabal, which is char-smoked aubergine with garlic and lemon and the Muhammara which is an interesting blend of five exotic nuts and spices. The hot Mezzes comprise a Falafel, the Bourak Bel Jibneh made of Halloumi, feta, Gruyere onions and herbs. There is a Fatayar, a puff pastry filled with spinach and pomegranate, Jawaneh which is marinated chicken wings cooked with garlic, lemon and coriander, a Bourakia which is spit-roasted minced lamb and the sautéed king prawns, all of which both my guests and I love and appreciate.

[wzslider autoplay=”true” lightbox=”true”]

The mezze platters are so filling that it already seems like we have reached the limit; yet, there is more to come. Thankfully, the mango sorbet helps clear our palate and prepares our senses for the next course. Antara, Preeti and I begin to slow down, as the Pizza slices called Manakish, an interesting flat bread topped with tomatoes, scallions, mint and olives, arrive. We sample just a slice each, to reserve space for the mains!

Antara gets a wonderful platter of giant prawns, which have been marinated and served with a vegetable and tomato stew and served with vivid cous cous. They say that the proof of the pudding is in the eating and this time it is the prawns! Antara exclaims that she loves the dish and manages to finish it. Preeti and I share the two vegetarian mains; the Yaket Bel Khodar, which is the artichokes served with carrot, potato and peas in a flavoured white sauce and the Morroccan Falafel Tagine, served in a tomato sauce accompanied with cous cous, always a favourite with me. We both enjoy tasting the two dishes, which are so uniquely flavored and individualistic.

The dessert is the all-time classic Baklava, a Turkish-style Phillo pastry layered with mixed nuts and topped with honey and perfumed rose water. Mindful of our waistlines, we opt to share one portion. The dish gets a big thumbs-up from us, on all counts of taste and flavour. We discuss the excellent presentation of the food and can’t help but love the quirky, stylish china that everything has been served on. A super evening sharing cuisine that all three of us love! Preeti, Antara and I agree that Azulia presents a food experience that gets a five star rating in all the areas!

An Italian extravaganza

Richa Tilokani visits the Ottimo Cucina Italiana restaurant at ITC Grand Chola, Guindy and comes back impressed with the delectable fare.

A constant refrain one hears in Chennai is that Ottimo Cucina Italiana is the best Italian restaurant in the city. So one Friday evening, I decide to head to Ottimo with my family to find out the truth for myself.

Trancio_di_Baccala_avvolto_in_Prosciutto_di_Parma_in_salsa_allo_Zafferano_e_basilico

We head to the ITC Grand Chola, famous for its imposing architecture and beautiful marble interiors. But we don’t linger in the lobby as hunger pangs take the better of us. So we go directly to the first floor to our destination- Ottimo.

As I enter, I am impressed by the magnificently large live kitchen in the heart of the restaurant. You can watch your meal being cooked here, if you prefer. Of if you prefer to lose yourself in the wide variety of drool- worthy Italian fare, then you can do that too. And that’s exactly what we did

Traditional Italian fare

We had to choose from an elaborate menu of wood fired pizzas, elaborate antipasto and a huge variety of pastas and cheeses, not to mention grappa at the exclusive grappa bar and select wines from its extensive list. I order the cheese starter, the mozzarella buffalo fantasia – which is warm mozzarella cheese with basil, fresh tomato and olive oil. My husband orders pollo alla imperatora which is a delicious dish of chicken breast stuffed with spinach and cheese and served deep fried with warm tomato sauce. My 4 year old son sticks to his staple garlic bread diet which is tasty enough to pass his quality test. My husband has had pizzas and pastas here earlier, and he can’t stop raving about them. But today we want to try something different.

For the main course, we order the lasagna vegetariana – traditional lasagna with layers of grilled veggies and tomato sauce. For drinks, we stick to a strawberry mocktail and a pineapple juice for my son. Everything is delicious and we can’t remember ever eating better Italian food at least in Chennai. We end the meal with a traditional Italian chocolate tart made of chocolate, olive oil and rock salt. Needless to say, its one of the best desserts we have ever had.

Fabulous Experience

Overall verdict- The food was divine, the dessert outstanding and the overall experience exceeded our expectations. The service was quick and efficient and our drinks were on the table in under ten minutes. Even the Chef paid special attention to us as we sampled more delicacies.

Ottimo has a wonderful ambience that spells relaxed luxury with its mellow lighting and cheerful vibe. It is perfect for special occasions and intimate family meals. I am happy to say that Ottimo lived up to its claim of being the finest Italian restaurant in the city. We had a great time at the restaurant and can’t wait to go back.

WriBook reviewter – Jyothi Menon

Publisher – The Helios Books

The book “Lock on Bridge Tumski” by author Jyothi Menon tells the poignant love story of protagonists Lena and Peter. Set in German Breslaw which is turned into the Polish Wraclaw, the story has the historic backdrop of World War 2.

As the World War rages, the lives of the two young lovers, Peter and Lena are thrown into turmoil. It eventually consumes their love as Lena (a Jew) is shipped to a concentration camp. There, she witnesses the horrific deaths of her entire family and suffers daily abuse and torture. Somehow, she manages to escape with her new friend. They head to India to make a new life for themselves, but Lena and Peter never forget each other.

Love, loss and life

There is love, loss, sadness in this story but there is also strength in each character as they survive even the worst of indignities. Although the two lovers separate and end up on two different continents, their love for each other never wanes.

After 32 long years, a letter alerts Peter of Lena’s whereabouts and he waits again by their favorite bridge.  But will it be Lena? Towards the end of the book, the significance of the bearer of the manuscript is revealed for a heart -warming ending.

Book review(1)

A great deal of research has gone into the book and this adds to the charm to the story. The hardship of the Jewish prisoners has been well- chronicled. So have the lives of the Indian society in Cochin, India. Read this if you enjoy love stories with loads of historical trivia.

About the author – Jyothi Menon works in an international bank and is known for her painting, writing and work in the field of Human Resource. Her 2009 book Angel of God was the recipient of the Jaycey award for Best novelist (finalist) in the Indie book category. She was inspired to write the book after a business trip to Wraclaw in April 2012.

Tie me Up, Tie me Down

0

tie me upYear: 1990

Language: Spanish

Director: Pedro Almodóvar

Cast: Antonio Banderas, Victoria Abril, Loles León

We see a young Antonio Banderas in an early Almodóvar movie which does not feature Penelope Cruz. This is what is known as a dark romantic comedy film. The movie starts off innocuously with the young Ricky (Banderas) being cleared for release from the psychiatric institution he was held in. He is on a single-minded mission to find the porn star, recovering drug addict Marina (Abril) who he has fallen madly in love with after he slept with her when he escaped from the institution once. He finds her on the set of her movie, stalks her, steals her keys from her dressing room and follows her home.

The movie slowly builds up the strangeness of Ricky. At first I think all is well and this is going to be a story of celebrity worship by a young lust-lorn guy. Was I wrong! Ricky kidnaps Marina, after biffing her a few times to stop her from screaming. He keeps her hostage in her house with the glorious goal of making her fall in love with him. And to this end, he ties her up to her bed, handcuffs her, tapes her mouth and threatens her with death if she resists or tries to escape. He never tries to sleep with her or touch her body sexually, or even look at her naked without her permission. He brings her drugs as per her demands. He cooks for her, brings her breakfast in bed and is over-all a caring and loving partner except…she is his hostage in her own house, under lock and key!

TIE ME UP! TIE ME DOWN! - UK Poster

One day, he comes back to the house beaten up by some drug suppliers who he gets into a scuffle with. And suddenly, the hostile Marina who hated him for what he was doing to her is madly in love with him. They spend many hours making passionate love, after which he tells her his sad story of being orphaned and kicked from home to home till he ended up in the institution. His big dream is to go back to his village and take Marina along, marry her and have many children. He decides to steal a car to make the journey. When he leaves the house to steal the car, Marina asks him to tie her up and at this point, the name of this bizarre film, ‘Tie me up, Tie me down’ will make sense to you! Will this couple ride off in the sunset together?

In other news, Marina’s sister, Lola (León) is a tremendously cheery, fun character in the movie who is baffled by Marina’s sudden disappearance and who finally finds her in the house when Ricky is off stealing a car. The lusty old director, Máximo who watches Marina’s porn videos and obsesses about Marina is another interesting angle in the film.

Verdict: Slightly disturbing movie with an interesting take on the permutations of love and lust.

Rating: 3/5

Hot: Spanish masala movie!

Not: Not a spectacular movie. The constant abuse that Marina is put through in spite of which she falls in love with her captor is psychologically baffling.

Incendies

Year: 2011

movie review

Language: French, Arabic

Director: Denis Villeneuve

Cast: Lubna Azabal, Mélissa Désormeaux-Poulin,Maxim Gaudette, Rémy Girard

This is one movie that kept me on edge throughout.  Adapted from Wajdi Mouawad’s play of the same name and based partly on the true story of Lebanese rebel Souha Fawaz Bechara, Incendies is set in an unnamed Middle Eastern country ravaged by the hatred between Christians and Muslims. In Canada, Jeanne(Poulin) and Simon(Gaudette) are suddenly thrust with some baffling wishes of their dead mother, Nawal Marwan (Azabal). They are helped by Nawal’s former employer, Jean Lebel (Girard) who is the executor of her will and they are told that they have to travel to her home country and find their father and brother. They thought their father was dead and their brother…well, they had no idea they even had a brother. To add to this confusion, Nawal asks to be buried face down, naked, with no epitaph and asks for her kids to fulfill her wishes, keep promises.

Incendies-poster
Simon is extremely upset and angry about his mother springing these rude shocks on them after her death, but Jeanne takes it upon herself to unearth the secrets, disentangle the mysteries of her mother’s life. She travels to the country of her mother’s birth (closely resembling Lebanon) with no clue except for an old photograph and a few people to meet. And slowly the story unravels. In a series of flashbacks and little stories, Nawal’s life is pieced together. Who was she? Who was their father? Who is this brother who has suddenly emerged? And what was Nawal’s life before Canada?

Jeanne has a hard time finding people who knew her mother. Or her story. The lone photo of her mother as a young woman is traced to have been taken in a prison in the south for rebels. She visits the prison and an old man who knew her mother. She is shocked to learn that her mother assassinated a prominent Christian leader and the reason for this is revealed through one of the flashbacks. Nawal, a Christian was in love with a Muslim boy and while trying to run away with him, her brothers shoot him dead. An honour killing. She is pregnant and in time, gives birth to a boy who is given up for adoption, with a tattoo on the back of his foot for identification. This is the brother Jeanne has to find.

As the story slowly reveals itself to you, more secrets tumble out. Nawal is known as ‘The Woman who sings’ in prison. Her spirit unshakeable, a torture specialist, Abou Tarek is brought it to rape her repeatedly till she breaks. She becomes pregnant and gives birth in prison….to twins. The story now takes some interesting, scary turns. Who is Abou Tarek? Who is their brother? I am awash with theories as I watch the movie.

incendies

I will be committing movie heresy if I reveal anymore. Watch this superbly crafted movie to know the truth behind the twins’ parentage and Nawal’s death.

Verdict: A great mystery based partly on a true story.

Rating: 4/5

Hot: Will keep you guessing throughout.

Not: Rape as a method of torture. Heartbreaking.

Looking way younger than his 34 years, Konda Srinivas Rao is the epitome of a self-taught artist. Hailing from Pedapudi in East Godavari district, he moved to Hyderabad in search of a livelihood. Working as a set assistant at Ramoji Film City initially, he did odd jobs and painted reproductions on order. Back in his village during his teen years, he worked as a daily wage person wherever he could find work. Unfortunately, one of those odd jobs – driving an auto – seem to be stuck to him and he doesn’t like that he is referred to as an auto driver turned artist. He says, “I drove one very briefly in my village when I was a teenager – I had to work for my family. The media only seems to pick on that and hypes it up while I did several other things too,” he says sitting in his tiny studio in Secunderabad.

He learnt art briefly in Hyderabad but just by looking at the works of various artists like Van Gogh, Picasso, Monet and M F Husain, he continued painting. He says, “I like the work of these artists… just by observing their art I learnt so much about painting and developing my own style.” While most of his current works are cityscapes, his personal preference is abstracts. “I like painting abstracts and after I studied a little art and the work of these masters I learnt the importance of expressing my deepest feelings and thoughts through my art.”

[wzslider autoplay=”true” lightbox=”true”]

Using the impasto technique, his paintings range from abstracts to rural landscapes and city scapes. His current exhibition titled Auto, Chalte kya? – a typical Hyderabadi expression being held at the Daira Art Gallery showcases his impressions of Hyderabad. He says, “When I first came here, I used to be overwhelmed and scared seeing all the traffic and the crowds. I got used to it afterwards. This exhibition has captured some of those impressions.”

The works are mostly in dark colours, evening snapshots of a crowded city, the auto – empty in the few paintings it is present in – kind of merges into the city’s background. Familiar landmarks like the Punjagutta floyover full of traffic are part of his themes. What signifies his work is a criss cross of lines across the paintings at times almost merging with the street lights. These he says stand for the cable wires and the electric poles that are ubiquitous all over the city. What is usually an eyesore in reality takes on a certain dignity in his work and the lines almost serve as a division of the picture in some of the frames.

The exhibition is on till the 20th of February at the Daira Centre for Arts and Culture, 100 A, Banjara Petals, Road No. 5, Banjara Hill, Hyderabad 34.
