Fashion Designer Gaurang Shah on his muse

0

The designer and his muse: Gaurang Shah, Hyderabad

Who do you consider your muse?Kirron Kher in gaurang creation_web

“Every woman on the planet is my muse. I am inspired by the charm of a woman wearing a traditional sari. Kirron Kher is definitely my favourite muse; it is very pleasing to see fashion icons like Sonam Kapoor and Vidya Balan keep coming back to pick up outfits from my collection. The appreciation for handlooms has grown over the years for its beauty and longevity. The jamdani weave gives traditional Indian fabrics an irresistible look both in terms of its color, texture and body comfort.

Has her look been inspired by something specific?

Every creation from my design wardrobe is inspired by tradition of India. Like the Taj Mahal, Temples of South of India, Panchatantra Stories and of course the nature around us especially the flowers and trees. I realized, early on, that the technique I follow (jamdani) the word ‘Impossible’ does not exist. Thanks to my weavers and the challenge I throw at them season after season.

Describe in detail the garments worn by the muse?

Kirron Kher admired the work in my ‘Ardhangini’ collections which was an unseen twist of Kanjeevaram with kalamkari. Vidya Balan loved our ‘Kalpavriksha’, she said after wearing that she never knew that you could blend organza with kanjeevarams. Sonam Kapoor calls our creations inventive and timeless. Sonam’s khadi Anarkali with Kanjeevaram border and matching Kanjeevaram dupatta was inspired by 16th century temple art.

Gaurang is a self-taught designer who learnt on the job at his family store. He believes that bringing back happiness in the weaver communities is the true fabric of culture and revival of tradition. He’s showcased his collections as part of the Gen Next at the Lakme Fashion Week as well as at the recent IIFA awards held in Kaula Lampur.

5 Healing Spices From Indian Kitchens

0

India is the land of spices and there’s a unique property in each of our spices that has its own healing benefits. Here’s some spices that one must incorporate into their daily diet.

Cinnamon

Cinnamon

Its a spice with a spicy-sweet flavour that is used in abundance in Indian households. And its ironic that this spice can help control blood-sugar problems. With the escalation of cases of Type 2 diabetes across the sub-continent, the use of this spice is highly recommended on a daily basis. It plays a huge part in management of blood sugar and other cardiovascular disease.

Turmeric

Turmeric

This beautiful yellow spice is used in abundance in all Indian households. And the western world is only now waking up to the fact that it is filled with medicinal goodness. Curcumin, the active ingredient in turmeric is the primary reason for the spice’s preventive and curative characters. A powerful antioxidant, it also has anti-inflammatory action.

Coriander

Coriander

This green, aromatic leaf is used to garnish almost any dish in Indian cuisine. While the leaf is commonly known as cilantro, its the coriander seed that holds an abundance of goodness in it. The sweet, nutty seed contain linalook and greenly acetate oils that are cell-protecting antioxidants. Its a great cure to sooth digestive disorders.

Fennel

Fennel

Fennel is one of the few plants that has it all — it’s a vegetable, herb and spice. That tang of licorice when you bite into a fennel seed comes from the oil anethole, the same compound that gives anise its licorice-like flavor. These can help offset menstrual cramps that affect more than 50 percent of menstruating women.

Ginger

Ginger

For thousands of years, traditional healers worldwide have turned to ginger to help ease nausea of all kinds. For the past few decades, scientists have been proving that ginger works. It’s considered the perfect remedy for morning sickness and also works in treating heartburn, migraine and asthma.

“SALT CO.531” Launched at Radisson Blu

0

Launch of “SALT CO.531” A Multi Cuisine Restaurant at Radisson Blu GRT, Airport Road

Salt .Co. No. 531 is conceived as an eclectic and quirky family restaurant with a strong personality in a comfortable laid –back bohemian ambience to let loose and relax. It offers open kitchens to interact with the chefs and make your food as you love it.

To match its personality the restaurant offers traditional Comfort Food culled from old family recipes with an inspired modern twist to leave you with a happy feeling through the meal experience.  You choose Comfort food to positively pique emotions, to relieve negative feelings and increase positive feelings of comfort. When you are feeling sad or tired, many of us reach for comfort food such as chocolate, ice cream, or chips. Macaroni and cheese might mean comfort to you. Or perhaps your source of succour is Biryani or Chicken soup or udon noodles. We have researched all the comfort food of the world to design this menu.

[wzslider autoplay=”true” transition=”‘slide'” lightbox=”true”]

Here, at Salt Co. 531, salt isn’t used just to flavour food. It is the very thing that makes food. Genuine Pink Himalayan Salt Blocks, quarried from the Khewra mines of the Western Himalayas, have this unique ability to withstand great heat, and great cold. This makes them perfect surface to cook on.

And we do. Burgers and pizzas, chicken and soy, fancy and regular, everything comforting. Pink Himalayan Salt has a special quality to its porosity – the measure of how loose or dense the crystals in the salt are – which means that food cooked on these blocks are moderately salted, allowing other flavours to shine through giving you a fuller, richer taste.

At Salt Co., we serve the world’s favourite comfort foods. The happy ones, the ones that feel like a warm, special hug… Come to just be yourself. With a place and a menu that’s as unpretentious as you are.

Mr.T.Nataraajan, CEO, GRT Hotels & Resorts says:

The origin of salt blocks can be traced to 326 BC, when Alexander was on his historic expedition to conquer India and beyond. One fine evening, his horses were found licking rocks, which eventually turned out to be salt. Close to 1800 hundred years after this discovery, Emperor Akbar, standardized the salt mining at Khewra, Pakistan, which is in practice till date. We take pride in introducing the salt block cooking and the 15 curated gourmet salts, organically harvested from different regions of the world to enhance your dining experience. Our own Semellier, an expert in mixing salts will be glad to guide you thru this experience.

Mr.Vikram Cotah, Chief Operating Officer, GRT Hotels & Resorts  whilst introducing the concept of the new restaurant informs us that

“The Inspiration for modern comfort food in the restaurant comes from the most simple but a significant ingredient – SALT which has a history dating back to more than 2000 years. Without salt, life itself would not be possible. Salt is as important to life as oxygen and water.

We have on offer 15 Original Gourmet sea salts harvested organically from all around the world which add the inspired twist to the comfort food . We also have a “Semellier” (as a sommelier is to wines) who is an expert in the knowledge of Salts to match the Gourmet salts with different recipes to enhance the meal experience. We have Pink Himalayan Salt blocks from the 16th Century mineshaft in Pakistan to cook Chef’s Signature recipes with minimum of oil which makes them very healthy. We also offer Volcanic Lava stones for cooking chef’s signature recipes with one of the oldest methods of cooking on a hot stone.”

“Love makes me feel on top of the world, everyday…” Mahesh Babu

0

Telugu film industry’s all time phenomenon, Ghattamaneni Mahesh Babu, is beyond hits and flops. The sobriquet of `Prince’ bestowed upon him by his legion of fans rests firmly as his prefix when the credits roll on the screen. His recent films, 1 – Nenokkadine and Aagadu, didn’t quite hit the bull’s eye at the box office but his growth as an actor was there for all to see. On the personal front, he enjoys his role as a father of two,  Gautham and Sitara; loves being Namrata’s husband and is indebted to his father, erstwhile superstar Krishna for showing him the path. The superstar opens up to Ritz about love, life and his upcoming film Srimanthudu.

When he was a school student, summer holidays for Mahesh Babu were always special. Quite unlike anybody his age, the little boy would often be found on the sets of a film shoot, delivering dialogues and practising his steps. His father, superstar of his times, Ghattamaneni Krishna, was keen to pass on the baton. Not surprisingly, Mahesh made his first on-screen appearance at the age of four in older brother Ramesh Babu’s acting debut Needa in 1979. Now, 36 years and 30 movies later, Mahesh can’t thank his father enough for the invaluable years of training. “I consider that period as my formative years as an actor. I learnt how to face a camera, say my lines, dance, everything,” says the star, adding, “I don’t think any institute could have taught me what I learnt on the sets.”

[wzslider autoplay=”true” transition=”‘flash'” lightbox=”true”]

Mahesh is stepping out of the tried-and-tested action formula but his previous blockbusters haven’t quite been accepted by his fans who were looking for Formula Mahesh. Critics were of the opinion that 1- Nenokkadine in which he essayed a psychologically scarred character, was ahead of time. What is his take on it?  “Yes I think it was,” says the ace actor in a matter of fact tone, “I have said this earlier. Complicated screenplays and narratives are yet to find an audience in our industry. It will take some more time. We need simple and straight forward storytelling.”

So does that mean he will stop taking risks?  “I have always made an effort to dabble in different genres of films,” he explains, “At the end of the day I want to be known as an actor. And an actor stops growing the moment he stops reinventing himself.” And the show goes on. His much awaited Srimanthudu is all set to hit the screens. What kind of role is he playing? “My role in Srimanthudu is very well written by my director Koratala Siva. He knew exactly what he wanted and how he wanted me to play Harsha ‘s part. It’s a very strong character. Very different from all my other films.”

What can the audiences expect from the movie? “The film is a wholesome entertainer for everyone to see and enjoy. Lots of moments which will make you laugh, cry and feel happy. Everyone has put in their best efforts for this project. A lot of attention has been given to detail. ‎I’m happy the audio of the film has been received so well. It’s a layered film with mass appeal. Above all, a very well made film. Everyone has done a great job. Jagapathi babu sir as my father, Shruti as Charusheela, Sukanya garu as my mum and Sampath as the Villian. All have played their roles brilliantly,” says the superstar who looks like a million bucks.

We heard that he sports 7 different looks in the film. “The look was jointly worked on by my director, my stylist and myself. It was a joint effort. We wanted to make sure there was a clear distinction between my college days with Shruti and then the village part of the film,” he says without giving away too much.

So how does he describe himself as an actor, “I would prefer to say I am a spontaneous actor. I am a director’s actor. I follow my director’s vision,” he says. Which role is closest to your heart in films and in personal life? “In my films it’s my role in Okkadu as Murari and now Srimanthudu. On the personal front I cherish my role as a father.”

Success has been his middle name for the longest time. Is there a Mahesh Babu formula that others could emulate? “Hard work and determination. I go on the sets everyday like a new comer. Waiting to learn and trying to do my best. Every day is a new day for me. So if this translates into success then success it is. Having said that, when it comes to films, I just become the face, the representative of a film by default, by the sheer virtue of being the hero,” he says, “Onscreen characters are the result of make-up men, stylists, dialogue writers, directors, producers, clap boys, choreographers… the list is endless,” he says modestly flashing the million dollar disarming smile. Any books that influenced him? “Eckhart Tolle’s `Power of Now’ and `New Earth’ influenced me a great deal.”

What does he do when he isn’t working? “I am quite happy with my own company and my family’s. Either I’m working or I’m at home. Life’s blissful this way,” says the actor who is a private person despite his stupendous following on Social Media and constantly growing popularity.

How does he rate himself as an actor, husband and father? “I am not good at rating myself,” he smiles mischievously with that famous twinkle in his eyes while suggesting, “You guys should run a poll. Think about it.” Sounds like a great idea. But the poll will have to wait; right now we need to know if there is anything about Namrata he would like to change? “Nothing comes to my mind right now. But no, I don’t think so.” Lucky him to have found a perfect partner but does she want to change anything about him? “Well, you’ll have to ask her that,” he throws a smart alecky one at us.

Looks like he has found true love. How would he describe the four letter word? “Love is very subjective for me. It’s everywhere, in everything, in everyone. You need to find it; feel it every day to be on top of the world. My family helps me do that to a large extent.” Does he like surprises? “I’m not a surprise kind of person. I like to be informed, well in advance.” What does Namrata mean to him? “She’s my best friend, wife, organiser and confidante,” Mahesh confides, “And she’s an excellent mother. She makes my life easier.”

How do they keep the spark alive in their marriage? When was the last he did something special for his wife? How often does she do anything to make you feel special? “I usually like to plan all our holidays and they are special. We are both very kids oriented but that’s what we love. That is our time together. Namrata is the surprise kind of girl. I must say she has her moments,” he says concluding our conversation. That’s Mahesh Babu for you. Charming, super talented and so very endearing! On and off screen. Now, shall we take a bow?
