Nurse held in child sale racket

Amuthavalli, a retired nursing assistant of a government hospital and her husband Ravichandran  a public sector bank employee have been selling newborn babies. They were arrested by the Namakkal police after a man who posed as a buyer recorded Amuthavalli’s conversation. She had taken voluntary retirement from the Rasipuram Government Hospital and claimed to be in the business of selling newborns for the past 30 years. She was heard saying that the rate of the baby would depend on the gender, complexion and weight of the baby.

For healthy female babies the rate would range from Rs 2.70 lakhs to 3 lakhs. The rate for healthy and fair boy babies ranged from Rs 4 lakhs to Rs 4.5 lakhs and babies with brown complexion would cost Rs 3 50 to 3.70 lakhs. It is said that she would also arrange for getting birth certificates for the newborns at additional charges. A complaint has been registered by the police and investigations are going on.
