Columbia police have arrested the current ” Mrs. World ” Caroline Jurie on charges of assault over an on-stage fracas where she pulled the crown off the newly crowned ” Mrs. Sri Lanka” and caused injuries to her head. Pushpika had to be hospitalized for the injuries and the incident stunned spectators as well a live social media audience.
Caroline was the previous year’s ” Mrs. Sri Lanka” and she went on to win the “Mrs. World” competition organised by a California based company. She and her associate were arrested, said a senior police official. Pushpika de Silva told reporters outside a police station in Columbo that she was ready to drop the charges if Caroline made a public apology, but she refused.

The court hearing is fixed for April 19 and meanwhile Caroline and her associate were released on bail. Neither of them nor their lawyers spoke to reporters outside the police station.

Caroline had claimed that Pushpika was divorced and hence ineligible to win the crown. This announcement created unruly scenes just after chief guest Shiranthi Rajapaksa, wife of Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa left the venue. To qualify for the title, contestants had to be married. Pushpika was estranged from her husband but still legally married. Caroline is also being sued for the damage caused to the stage and the backstage dressing rooms.
