Cooperatives Minister Sellur K. Raja made an announcement that onions would be sold in mobile shops and by farm fresh outlets at lower prices in a bid to ease the supply. He assured that the prices will come down further. Right now the farm fresh outlets were selling onions at Rs 40/ a kg. With more supply, the prices would come down further. Onions have been imported from Egypt and Tamilnadu has sought a share of  1000 tonnes.
These onions would be sold through farm fresh outlets and ration shops across the state. In metros like Chennai, mobile shops too will be stocked with onions for the benefit of the public. The imported variety of onions are more pungent and much larger with each weighing 500 gms to 1 kg. The Minister further revealed that onions were currently grown in 60000/ acres in Tamilnadu. An additional 50000/ acres would be used for their cultivation. He hoped that all these combined efforts would bear fruit and bring down the prices to normal.
