Justice Bhushan Ramakrishna Gavai took oath as the 52nd Chief Justice of India at a ceremony held at the Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi on Wednesday, May 14, 2025. He was sworn in by President Droupadi Murmu.
He is the first Buddhist Chief Justice of India. He pledged commitment to uphold the Constitution and to faithfully discharge his duties. He shook hands with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankar, Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal, Home Minister Amit Shah and other dignitaries.Judges of the Supreme Court and High Court both sitting and retired were present at the swearing-in ceremony.
He is expected to call for a meeting with all the judges to get suggestions as well as share his views about the judiciary. Only around 10 days are left before the court goes into the annual summer recess. However, there will be a vacation court with at least three Benches taking up cases.The CJI has a tenure of little over six months. He will retire on November 23, 2025.
