The Tamil Nadu government appointed a Commission of Inquiry to be headed by retired judge Aruna Jagadeesan  to inquire into the Thoothukudi violence.

However there were protests against her appointment saying that the probe should be conducted by a sitting judge of the Madras High Court and not by a retired judge as only a sitting judge can act in an independent manner to elicit the truth behind the shoot out and who gave the order for the shoot out.
