Granddaughter of Mahatma Gandhi passes away

Usha Gokani, the granddaughter of Mahatma Gandhi passed away in Mumbai on Tuesday at the age of 89. She was ailing for the past five years and bedridden for the past two years according to the executive secretary of Mani Bhavan.


Usha spent her childhood in Wardha’s Sevagram Ashram that was founded by Mahatma Gandhi.
Usha Gokani was the former chairperson of the Gandhi Smarak Nidhi in Mumbai that was housed in Mani Bhavan. It was established with the object of conducting and promoting constructive activities which Mahatma Gandhi was associated with during his lifetime. The Smarak Nidhi formally started functioning on October 2, 1955. Mahatma Gandhi is said to have stayed at Mani Bhavan between 1917 and 1934 and it bears witness to some momentous decisions and mighty movements in the country’s freedom struggle.
