The government has plans to build hostels for working women in 19 districts. The task has been handed over to the Public Works Department. These hostels will benefit working women from the economically weaker sections of the society. Already the PWD is running hostels in various districts including Dharmapuri, Madurai, Thoothukudi, Chennai and Cuddalore.
The new hostels would accommodate 50 people and were built at a cost of nearly 1 crore. Women who earn upto Rs 25,000/ a month in Chennai and upto Rs 15,000/ in other districts are eligible to get admission. Monthly rent of Rs 300 is charged in Chennai and Rs 200 in the districts. This project would benefit about 950 working women in the State as they would have to shell out exhorbitant rents in other places.
