Government extends tenure of RBI governor for 3 years

The Government has extended the tenure of RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das by 3 years. He will now hold the post till December 2024.


Shaktikanta Das had served as former secretary of the Department of Economic Affairs from 2015 to 2017. He belongs to the 1980 batch and is a Tamil Nadu cadre IAS officer. He was entrusted with the mammoth task of overseeing the re-monetising of the economy after a shocking decision of the government to withdraw 86 per cent of the currency in circulation in the year 2016.
Shaktikanta Das graduated in history from the well known St. Stephen’s College in Delhi. He was brought to the Finance Ministry when the BJP led NDA government came to power in 2014 and was given charge of the crucial revenue department.
