Government cancels NRI’s passports for abandoning their wives

The Government of India has cancelled passports of 45 non resident Indians for abandoning their wives said  Maneka Gandhi who is the Minister  for Women and Child Development. An agency called integrated nodal agency has been looking into the matter and has issued look out circulars  to absconding husbands in the case of NRI marriages. So far, 45  passports have  been impounded  She also said that the government had  introduced a bill in the Rajya Sabha to give justice to women who have been abandoned by their NRI husbands.

However the bill has been stalled in the Upper House it envisages  registration of marriages by non resident Indians and sought  amendment of the Passport Act and amendment of the Code of Criminal Procedure. The  bill has been a joint initiative of the Ministry of External Affairs and the Ministry of Women and Child Development.
