Former US police officer sentenced to more than 20 years for murder of George Floyd

Derek Chauvin, a former Minneapolis police officer who was convicted in the murder of George Floyd was sentenced to more than 20 years in prison. He pleaded guilty for violating the civil rights of Floyd, a black man. It may be recalled that Chauvin put his knees on Floyd’s neck for nearly 10 minutes till he died. The incident sparked outrage in the US.


Chauvin. 46, is already in prison and is serving a 22 and a half year sentence. He will serve his term in a Minnesota state penitentiary where he has been held in solitary confinement.
The federal prosecutors sought a sentence of 25 years. Though Chauvin spoke before his sentence, he did not apologize for his actions.
