Foreign lawyers and firms cannot appear in Indian courts

0

The Bar Council of India (BCI) has assured Indian lawyers that foreign lawyers as well as law firms will not be permitted to appear in Indian courts or judicial forums and they will only be permitted to advise their clients about foreign and international laws. A statement in this regard was issued by BCI secretary Srimanto Sen.

Foreign lawyers and law firms will not be allowed to appear in any Court, Tribunal, Board or before any statutory or regulatory authority or any forum legally entitled to take evidence on oath. They can however appear for their clients in international commercial arbitration matters. This move will encourage India to become a preferred venue for international arbitration proceedings and become a hub of international commercial arbitration.
The Bar Council of India is committed to protect and safeguard the interests and welfare of the advocate fraternity in the country, said a release from the BCI.
