Ex-Minister of Tamil Nadu gets 5 year jail term

R.Indira Kumari, was the Social Welfare Minister in Jayalalitha’s cabinet between 1991 and 1996. Both she and her husband A Babu were sentenced to jail for five years by a special court in Chennai. Indira Kumari left the AIADMK and joined the DMK a few years ago.
The accused Indira Kumari, her husband and two senior IAS officers were booked for having floated two trusts M/s Mercy Mother India Charitable Trust and M/s Bharani Swathi Educational Trust and committed criminal breach of trust to swindle government funds to the tune of Rs 15.6 lakh.


According to the prosecution, the former minister’s husband was the managing trustee of these two trusts. The CBI booked them under various sections of the IPC including Section 420 -for cheating.
After more than 17 years, they were sentenced to rigorous imprisonment of 5 years each and a fine of Rs 10,000/.
