A wild elephant in the forest of Chittoor district in Andhra Pradesh lost its 2 year old male baby calf due to eloctrocution. It was electrocuted when it came into contact with an insulated cable of a transformer in a field in Gobbilla village abutting the Koundinya wildlife sanctuary.

The calf was accompanied by it’s mother who made desperate attempts to lift the body till a large crowd of villagers gathered and it retreated to the forest. The calf was buried by the villagers with traditional rituals. The forest officials cut off the power supply to the transformer which killed the baby elephant and also the supply to a few other transformers in the nearby fields as they anticipated that the mother elephant would return to the site of the tragedy. As anticipated, the mother elephant returned and avenged the death of it’s calf by pulling down the transformer and snapping all the cables. It then went to the burial site of it’s calf, lifted it’s trunk in a show of grief and retreated into the forest.
