A bill has been introduced in the US House of Representatives to declare Deepavali, the festival of lights, a federal holiday.
Congresswoman Carolyn B Maloney said that she was both happy and excited to introduce this Act, which will enshrine Deepavali as a federal holiday. According to her, there is no better time to do this than the present moment, due to the darkness created by the terrible pandemic. The historic legislation was co-sponsored by many lawmakers including Indian-American Congresswoman Raja Krishnamoorthi.

Powerful Congressman Gregory Meeks, Chairman of the House Foregn Affairs Committee, lended support to the legislation. The House Foreign Affairs Committee will support, advance and move forward with this great bill.
Meeks stated ”This is something that should be shared with all of us in American society. It’s a good day, because we’re talking about light over darkness.”
