Four women police constables from Chitoor district in Andhra Pradesh cycled 1,250 kms as part of a mission to encourage women in distress to approach the police. Their 45 day rally began on October 24th and ended on December 6th.
Numerous awareness programmes were organised in about 100 locations in both rural and urban areas. The four constables Nirmala, Tirumala,Nagaratna and Bhargavi interacted with thousands of women relating to crimes against women including domestic violence, trafficking and sexual assault. Police personnel, lawyers, women’s groups, teachers and students joined the campaign in large numbers. The campaign aimed at dispelling fears of women to approach the police and for them to handle matters boldly without taking recourse to negative measures like attempting suicide.
