City girls win award for innovative app

A team of three school girls from Chennai bagged the first place at Technovation Girls organised by Technovation, a global, non profit organisation that focusses on technology education. The team named ‘ Social Relay’ won a prize money of $12,000/. The team members, Akshara Vasanth, a Class 6 student of PSBB’, K K. Nagar, Ishwarya Kanakaraj, a Class 7 student of Panchayat Union Middle School and Stella Arokiasamy, a Class 9 student of Angel Matriculation School were mentored by Tanya Elizabeth, a Class XI student of Kola Perumal Chetty Vaishnav School.

The app ‘Baton’ was designed to maximize the social impact of initiatives started by social work interns. The app works around the idea of a relay race where the baton is handed over and aims to complete social work initiatives started by one intern. It will bring together social workers, students, corporates, NGO’S and volunteers. This program encourages girls between ages 10 and 18 years to use technology and apply the needed skills to solve real life problems.
