Chennai Mayor to present budget after a gap of 6 years

The annual budget of the Greater Chennai Corporation for the year 2022 to 2023 will be presented by newly elected Mayor R.Priya at the Ripon Building on Saturday. The budget will be presented by the mayor after a long gap of 6 years.


The debate on the budget will take place on the same day. The previous city corporation budget was presented in 2016 and after that the seats of mayor and deputy mayor fell vacant. The tenure of other civic body representatives also fell vacant but elections were not held due to pending litigations.
When the DMK party led by Stalin came to power in May 2021, he announced that he would take steps to hold elections for local bodies both urban and rural. Accordingly, elections were held in February this year. The ruling DMK won 153 seats out of 200 and the party nominated R.Priya for the post of mayor and M.Mahesh Kumar as deputy mayor.
