Chennai and parts of 3 districts to go under total lockdown from June 19

Chennai and parts of Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram and Thiruvallur districts will go under a complete lockdown from June 19th to June 30th. Grocery shops, vegetable shops and petrol bunks can be open between 6 a.m. and 2 p.m. People traveling in their own vehicles will be allowed to travel only within 2 kms from their houses. Travel will be permitted only for essential services and medical emergencies.
This lockdown was announced under the Disaster Management Act of 2005. The decision was taken by Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami after consulting  medical experts regarding the current situation in Chennai and the neighbouring districts which have seen a growing number of Covid 19 positive cases. Hospitals and pharmacies will be kept open. Autos and taxis will be permitted only for medical emergencies. Banks will function only on June 29th and 30th with 33 percent staff. PDS shops will be open from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
