Boxer Lovlina Borgohain from Assam has assured India of their first boxing medal in the ongoing Tokyo Olympics. She defeated former world champion Nien-Chin Chen of Chinese Taipei and entered the semi-finals.
The 23 year old Lovlina will now have to face the reigning world champion Busenaz of Turkey who defeated Anna Lysenko from Ukraine in the quarter final round.
Lovlina was extremely calm while facing her opponent who had defeated her in the past. She began with an aggressive start, followed it up with counter-attacks and defended well to emerge victorious.
Lovlina started her career as a kickboxer before the Sports Authority of India noticed her while searching for talent in Assam. She was introduced to boxing and excelled in it. She won a bronze medal in her debut world championship in 2018 and again won another bronze medal the next year. Besides this, she also won bronze medals in the Asian Championships.
