Samira Ahmed, a journalist with BBC was paid a fraction of the fee received by a male colleague doing a similar job. Not one to take this lying down, she filed a sex discrimination lawsuit against BBC and succeeded. Samira was paid $608 per episode of “Newswatch” on BBC, while her colleague Jeremy Vince received $3920 per episode of “Points of View”.

The Tribunal found that the work involved in both shows was similar if not same. The BBC defended the case saying that they always believed in gender equality and were committed to equal pay but were struggling to close it’s gender pay gap which was highlighted in 2017 when they were forced to publish a list of employees earning 150,000 pounds or more a year and it was discovered that two thirds of the people on the list were men. After getting a verdict in her favour, Samira was thrilled that the issue had been resolved as she loved working with BBC.
