The World Health Organisation (WHO) has stated that the pandemic can be brought under control in a matter of months depending upon the action of individual governments. The Director General of WHO Dr. Tedros Ghebreyesus stated in a news conference that the public health measures together with the global vaccine equity would curb the transmission and impact of the coronavirus.

According to Tedros “This pandemic is a long way from over but we have many reasons for optimism. The decline in deaths during the first two months of the year shows that this virus and its variants can be stopped.”
The UK is one country which has administered the first dose to 32 million people out of a population of 66 million. Nigeria on the other hand has administered the first dose to only 0.1% of its population of 2.5 million. Similarly countries like Yemen, Honduras, Sierra, Leone, Gabon, Angola, Uzbekistan and Vietnam have administered the vaccine to only 0.1 % of their population.
Dr. Maria van Kerkhove, the head of WHO’s technical response stated that the vaccinations alone were not sufficient to combat the virus but have to be teamed up with public health and social measures to prevent infections and save lives.
