A 50,000 year old lake named Lonar in Maharashtra has suddenly changed colour. Experts feel that the change in colour could be due to the increased salinity in the water or the presence of red algae or even a combination of both. A local geologist Gajanan Kharat stated that this colour change to pink has taken place on earlier occasions but was not this prominent.
Actually it was found that the amount of water in the lake was reduced and it has become shallower causing the salinity level to go up. Samples are being sent to various labs to find out the reason for the colour change of the water. Researchers are also investigating if the presence of red algae has made the water turn pink. The lake is located about 500 kms east of Mumbai and is a popular tourist attraction.
